Chart or calculator?

Use a chart when you are grading a stack of papers with the same number of questions: you only count wrong answers and look up one row. Use the calculator for one-off scores, odd test sizes, partial credit, or a different grading scale. For GPA points behind each letter, see the grading scale chart. For curves, extra credit and partial credit, see how to grade a test.

Frequently asked questions

What is an EZ grader chart?

An EZ grader chart is a table that lists every possible score on a test of a given length. You count the wrong answers on a paper, find that number in the chart, and read off the percentage and letter grade, so you never have to do the division yourself.

How do I use an easy grader chart to grade a test?

Open the chart that matches the number of questions on your test. Count the wrong answers on the student's paper, find the matching score in the first column, and read the percentage and letter grade in the same row.

How do I print an EZ grader chart or save it as a PDF?

Open the chart for your test length and press Print / save as PDF. Only that chart is printed. In the print window, choose Save as PDF as the destination to get an easy grader chart PDF instead of paper. You can also copy the chart for a spreadsheet or download it as a CSV.

Is there a chart for half points?

Yes. For tests of up to 30 questions, each chart page has a half-point chart that lists every score in 0.5 steps. For longer tests, use the calculator and switch it to half points.

What grading scale do these charts use?

The standard U.S. plus/minus scale: A at 93%, A- at 90%, B+ at 87%, B at 83%, and so on down to D- at 60%. Each page also shows the letter on a plain 10-point scale for popular scores. If your school uses different cutoffs, read the percentage column and apply your own.

My test has a different number of questions. What should I do?

Use the easy grader calculator. Enter any test size and it builds the full chart for it, which you can also print or copy.

Can I use these charts in my classroom?

Yes. Print them, save the PDF, or paste the table into a spreadsheet for your own classroom use.
